Dueling Magic
January 10, 2007
Two Oakland galleries, with locations near each other, are currently presenting shows with the word “magic” in the title. Magic is such a loaded word, conjuring (pun intended) many contexts. When it comes to ar though I believe there are elements of magic in successful work. I’m not sure how to describe it excactly, but I know it when I see it.
Here are pics from Rowan Morrison’s show of “We Are Magic” by Ezra Li Eismont.

Here are pics from Hector Serna Jr.’s “Mondo Magic” at the Boontling Gallery.

In a battle of art wizards, I’d give Hector the edge. He seems to be stirring one big dark cauldron. Sorry for the so-so pics. The new camera is with MKC down in Disneyworld this week. Although I swore I’d never step foot in Florida in my lifetime, I’ll be heading there this weekend to meet up with MKC at my mom’s. I’m a good son!
