Call & Response is the first collaborative project between John Casey and Mary Kalin-Casey, in which each took turns prompting or responding to the other’s work. In some cases, John went first, drawing a character engaged in activity. Mary then responded to the drawing with a single-page story, essay, or poem. When Mary first provided a written piece to John, his challenge was then to depict her story while maintaining the exploratory elements of drawing. Sometimes dark, yet often funny, these tales and characters evoke a peculiar, fantastic world to mirror and illuminate our own.
